Skin Care In Plano TX: Tips For Keeping Your Skin Healthy

Skin care in Plano TX can be a full-time job, especially in the summer time.  Hot, dry air, dehydration and the scorching sun can do extensive damage, some of which you can see right away and some that you won’t see for many years.  And though your best bet for keeping or restoring the youthful, dewy appearance of your skin is treatment at Le Beau Visage Medical Spa, there are some things you can do daily to help you look your best:

Protect your skin from the sun.  In this day and age, sun protection is a no-brainer.  The rates of basal, squamous and melanoma skin cancers are rising every year and sun protection is the first line of defense against them.  In addition to skin cancer, long-term exposure to the sun causes wrinkles, age spots and more, so protection should include wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wearing protective clothing like wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts and long pants and seeking shade when the sun is at its hottest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Stop smoking.  When it comes to skin care in Plano TX, not smoking may not seem like the most obvious thing you should do; but smoking narrows the blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin, which decreases blood flow.  This deprives the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to the health of your skin.  Smoking also damages collagen and elastin – the fibers that give your skin strength and elasticity.  And the repetitive pursing of lips when inhaling and squinting to avoid smoke leads to wrinkles around the eyes and mouth.

Eat healthful foods.  There’s no escaping the effect the food we eat has on our bodies – and our skin is no exception.  Healthful foods like lean proteins, fruits, vegetables and whole grains have a good overall effect on our skin and other bodily systems.  Drinking plenty of water and eating foods low in carbohydrates gives the skin a brighter, healthier look and feel.

Don’t stress out.  As with an unhealthy diet, stress affects every system of our bodies.  In fact, excess stress can trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems that result from stress-related hormonal surges.  You must find a way to manage your stress like setting reasonable limits on what you can accomplish during the day and remember to take the time for relaxing activities that you enjoy, like reading or taking a walk.

Be gentle to your skin.  Avoid strong soaps and long, hot showers and baths as these can strip your skin of protective oils.  Always use a sharp razor when shaving your face, legs and underarms to avoid cutting or abrading your skin and use shaving cream, gel or lotion to cut down on razor drag.  Most importantly, moisturize often with a moisturizer that has an SPF of 15 or higher.
