What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical Peels work by chemically exfoliating the outermost skin layers that have been compromised by sun damage, acne, or signs of aging. The treatment can be performed on the face, neck, décolletage, or hands to enhance vitality and suppleness. Chemical peels are known for combating the following concerns:

  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Age spots
  • Liver spots
  • Fine lines, creases, and wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Irregular pigmentation
  • Scaly or rough skin
  • Scarring
  • Sun damage

Chemical peels are formulated as light, medium, or deep, with the following characteristics:

  • Light Peel – Light peels, formulated with alpha-hydroxy acid, are gentle enough to be undergone every six weeks and require the least amount of recovery.
  • Medium Peel – A medium peel is usually engineered with trichloroacetic or glycolic acid. It focuses on the outer and middle skin layers, producing more dramatic rejuvenation outcomes. Thus, medium peels come with more downtime than light peels and should only be undergone every 4-6 months.
  • Deep Peel – A deep peel is made with phenol or trichloroacetic acid and should be undertaken only every few years. It is the best solution for combating entrenched skin folds and scars.

Let’s Get Started

What’s the First Step?

To get started on the road to a clearer, brighter complexion, you will first need to undergo a private consultation with our providers at Le Beau Visage Medical Spa in Frisco, TX. During this initial meeting, we will analyze your skin, review your medical history, and begin curating a personalized treatment plan that will achieve your unique goals for improvement.

After your candidacy has been confirmed and your chemical peel treatment date has been established, we will provide preparation guidelines to ensure your treatment experience is safe, effective, and seamless. For at least one week prior to your peel, avoid any type of skin exfoliation or scrubs, and watch out for harsh ingredients in at-home skincare products. If you are using anti-aging or anti-acne medications, you will need to hit the pause button temporarily, as these compounds may complicate the skin’s ability to tolerate a chemical peel. Lastly, make sure to schedule your chemical peel well in advance of any important events so that your skin will have the proper amount of time to heal and recover.

What to Expect on the Day of a Chemical Peel Treatment

A chemical peel is a simple, straightforward procedure that can make a world of difference when it comes to removing layers of skin damage and refining the complexion. During your appointment, your provider will apply a chemical solution to the skin using a brush, cotton ball, sponge, or gauze. The solution then stays in the treatment area for a certain amount of time, dictated by your unique treatment plan. Once the timer goes off, the solution is removed, and a cold compass is placed to soothe and cool the skin.

Chemical Peel Recovery

Recovery time after a chemical peel depends on whether the peel is light, medium, or deep. With a light peel, patients typically need around a week of downtime. More aggressive peels can require up to 2-3 weeks of healing time. The skin may become irritated, dry, and flaky during the recovery process, so it’s always a good idea to schedule your chemical peel at least a month before any important events or special occasions.

The most important guideline to follow after a peel is to protect your skin from the damaging UV rays of the sun, as your complexion will be extra sensitive after the treatment. Wear sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher anytime you are outdoors, and avoid being in direct sun between 10 am and 4 pm each day. Dr. Riehs and his team in Frisco will provide additional customized aftercare instructions based on your chosen type of chemical peel.
