Everything An Esthetician Wants You To Know About Spider Veins

Esthetician Plano TX

Esthetician Plano TXIf you’ve ever wondered what an esthetician  does and whether or not you’ll ever need the services of one, you should know that an esthetician is a trained skin care specialist who focuses on cosmetic treatments for a variety of skin problems.  If you have acne, wrinkles, excess body hair or some other skin issue, there’s a good chance you’ll need the services of an esthetician at some point in your life.  And if you’re part of the almost 50 percent of adults in America with one of the most common skin complaints – spider veins – an esthetician can help with those as well.  Here are the answers to some questions you may have about spider veins:

What Are Spider Veins Exactly?
Spider veins, like varicose veins, are abnormally enlarged blood vessels that appear near the surface of the skin, usually on the legs or the face.  They occur in clusters of red, blue or purple veins that look like spider webs and they tend to afflict women in slightly greater numbers than men.  Other than their appearance, there are normally few symptoms that accompany spider veins, though sometimes, people experience itching around the clusters or even leg tingling.

What Causes Spider Veins?
The exact cause of spider veins is unknown but there are a number of risk factors that can contribute to their development that include:

  • A family history of leg vein problems (especially varicose veins)
  • Advancing age
  • Excess weight
  • Prolonged standing (usually work-related) or sitting with legs crossed
  • Pregnancy hormones
  • Use of birth control pills
  • Wearing tight clothing or underwear
  • A history of blood clots
  • Damage to the veins
  • Postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy
  • Medical conditions that can cause increased pressure in the abdomen like liver disease, heart failure or groin surgery.

Is There Anything I Can Do To Prevent Spider Veins?
In general, spider veins aren’t life-threatening; but their appearance can have a detrimental affect on your quality of life.  Though they’re not entirely preventable, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk of developing spider veins, like exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, avoiding crossing your legs and elevating your legs when you’re resting.

What Can An Esthetician Do About My Spider Veins?
An esthetician has a number of treatments that can improve the appearance of spider veins including sclerotherapy and laser vein therapy.  Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a liquid solution into your spider veins that causes them to collapse and eventually disappear.  Laser vein therapy shrinks the veins by heating them.  Both treatments may require several sessions to get the desired results.

If you are bothered by unsightly spider veins, call us at Le Beau Visage Medical Spa in Plano, TX at (214) 705-7676 to make an appointment for a consultation with an esthetician.  You can also visit us online at www.lebeauvisagemedicalspa.com to find out more about our skin treatments and products.
