What Is IPL?

By Jason M. Riehs, MD, JD

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a procedure used to treat a broad range of skin conditions. Although it may seem like a type of laser treatment, IPL releases many wavelengths of light. Laser treatments only use one wavelength of light. While IPL and laser treatments both use light to treat target areas, IPL works by releasing a broad spectrum of light that covers a large area. In addition, this treatment reaches the second layer of skin without causing harm to the top layer, so it is less damaging to your skin than laser treatments.

Who Are Good Candidates for the Procedure?

IPL treatment is ideal for those who have certain skin conditions, such as freckles and age spots, which are caused by prolonged exposure to the sun. It can also be an effective treatment for melasma, acne scars, and stretch marks. The technology behind this treatment is effective because it destroys the cells that cause melanin production, which is the pigment that gives skin its color. When these cells become destroyed, the body will create new skin cells for a more even skin tone.

What to Expect During the Procedure

To prepare for a treatment, you should avoid the following for at least two weeks:

Your skin is cleaned before the treatment, and a cooling gel will be applied to your skin to help keep you comfortable. We will provide you with protective eyewear to wear during the procedure. The IPL device moves over the target area releasing a controlled intensity of light.

How long the treatment takes generally depends on which areas are being treated. For optimal results, many individuals will need at multiple treatments that should take place every few weeks. This is so your skin has enough time to heal between treatment sessions. After each session, you can resume your normal activities. However, you should avoid the sun and hot water for a few days because your skin may be sensitive. Many individuals choose this treatment because recovery is faster than laser treatments and microdermabrasion.

Having even-toned skin is a common goal, and IPL may be an ideal way to help you achieve a rejuvenated complexion. Would you like to see if you are an ideal candidate for IPL?
